Helen Hecker asked:

Assuming you already have a copy of your annual credit report you may have already found some errors that should be removed. Errors should always be a big concern because they can and probably have affected your credit score, also called a FICO. You can repair your credit with a little bit of help.

It may seem like a lot of work but it’s really easy. The hardest part is actually sitting down to do it. You’ll need to check all three credit bureaus to make sure the same error isn’t on all three but if you just have one credit report, start with that one.

First make a list of any and all errors that you find on your personal credit report. These could be in the form of personal information such as birth date or more likely there will be information that you know not to be true such as late payments or no payments recorded etc. If you think there is any possibility that you could be wrong check your past history with the creditor in question first.

You want to make sure you are right before you make the request to have any information removed from your credit report.

You will be sending the letter only to the credit bureau mentioned on the report, which would be Esperian, Equifax or TransUnion. You don’t want to sound angry in the letter, just be matter-of-fact, straightforward and business-like. Just outline the facts – name of creditor, dates, and the error(s) or problem(s) you’re finding on the credit report.

Here is a sample letter:

Date:

To whom it may concern at Esperian (or other credit bureau):

I recently acquired a copy of my credit report and found some errors that I’d like to dispute. I am enclosing documentation to prove the information is incorrect and would like a correction. I value my good standing and good credit history and want to maintain a good credit rating and credit score.

Name the creditor along with the reference date including the month, day and year if possible.

The error(s) I have found are:

I’m including copies of my payment record, with a (cancelled check or online payment print-outs or any other documentation that you have).
I would appreciate any attention to the matter as I would like my credit report to be accurate. I’m sure you understand that credit bureaus need to include only information that is accurate in my file.

Thank you for taking a look at my letter and file and hopefully making the necessary corrections so I can continue to maintain my good credit standing. Please let me know that my file has been reviewed and what action has been taken. I would also like a copy of my corrected credit report sent to the enclosed address. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Besides your full name as shown on the report, include you mailing address, a copy of the report that you have, your social security number, driver’s license photocopy and any other documentation such as a cancelled check or online payment confirmations.

Make a copy of the letter for yourself and a copy of any enclosures with the letter. Send the dispute letter by certified mail with a ‘return receipt’ requested. Then make sure to get the free credit reports from the other two main credit bureaus or reporting agencies to make sure they don’t have the same incorrect information. You can get free instant credit reports from the other two online.

Tom

Wesley Atkins asked:

Do you have a poor credit rating? If so, you are one of tens of thousands of Americans with the same problem. In fact, it seems that this has become a national ‘disease.’ And just what do people need that have a disease? They need a cure.

Here are some sure-fire solutions to ‘ repair bad credit ‘. Keep in mind, like most ‘diseases,’ credit repair can take some time, but complete healing is possible.

The First Step

The first thing you need to do is find out what is being reported about you. This is easy and inexpensive. For under $10, you can get your credit report from one of the three main credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. Keep in mind however, that if you have recently been denied credit, you can get a free report from the same credit bureau the lender used to reject you as long as you do so within 30 days.

What You Don’t Need

You don’t need a repair clinic. Why? There is no legal way to ‘repair’ your credit. Those that claim to know loopholes and shortcuts are merely out for your money. They may even get you into legal trouble by having you fudge the facts or creating a whole new file for you. Anything legal that a clinic can do, you can do just as easily and without the cost of ‘professional’ help.

Further Steps to Take

1. Stop using your credit cards immediately. Put them somewhere where they will not tempt you. You may consider keeping at least one card for emergency purposes. Additionally, with poor credit, you may find it more difficult to get a credit card in the future. If you keep at least one account open, then you won’t have to worry about applying.

2. Be Honest With Yourself. Taking a good hard look at your financial situation, particularly if it isn’t good, can be very difficult. Yet, to get out debt you have to fully understand what the situation is.

3. Find the Errors. Believe it or not, up to 40% of all credit reports have errors in them. If you find that your credit report shows something that is not true, you need to write to them with all the details. Be sure to use certified mail so that you can keep track of who you wrote to, when you wrote, and who received the mail on the credit bureau’s end. Then ask the credit bureau to send a corrected report to anyone who has requested a report on you in the last 6 months.

4. Find the Omissions. By law, you are allowed to add information to your report that you believe will help your rating. This might be additional information about a repayment of a loan, good credit you have with companies that do not report to the credit bureau, or salary increases.

5. You Must Have a Plan. Whether you determine to pay your bills down little at a time, take a second job, go to credit counseling, or file bankruptcy, you need to make a plan and stick to it. In order for your credit to be improved, you have to have a plan and then take action!

6. Talk to those that you owe. Creditors want their money. They do not want you to default (quit paying). In fact, most creditors will work with you to get a reduced payment schedule. If you can keep them from reporting you to the credit bureau, then it won’t hurt your credit. The catch here is this: be sure to stick to the new negotiated plan – they won’t renegotiate if you fail to comply.

7. The Best Cure is Time. Have you ever heard the saying ‘time heals all wounds’? It also heals your credit. After 7 years, most items will be dropped. This is good news if you are working to correct your credit. As each year passes, more and more bad items will drop off and more and more good items will be included. Eventually, the disease will be cured.

Follow these steps and you will find that your credit looks healthier and healthier each day. Eventually this path will lead you to full recovery. Good Luck!

Bill

Jason Hobbs asked:

An individual gets his bureau credit repair report from one of the three centralized authorized credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. These credit bureaus also provide one free report, which means that an individual can get three reports annually.

An individual needs to be always attentive to grab these opportunities for scrutinizing his financial security, personal protection, and credits. The credit report turns out to be of a great significance at the time of restoring a bad credit.

Oversights:

It is quite crucial to leap errors or faulty dealings on the bureau credit repair report and get it corrected. If it is delayed to shove these faulty accounts instantly, it will become very tough to tackle these problems in the future. As a result, the scores of the credits will get affected badly, which is just the spotlight of the outcome to arrive. Later on, the recovery agents of the bills related to the unpaid stuffs and programs will continue to harass.

As soon as an error is spotted, it is necessary to script an application to conflict the data and forward it to the credit departments from where the bureau credit repair report was emerged out. One month of time is granted to the credit department to respond to the application.

The period-in-between this one month, the credit department officials will thoroughly confirm the claim made by the individual on the basis of the credit data. In case if they lack the factors to refute the claim, than they are bound to alter the report in the favor of the claimer.

One also has the liberty to add the written declarations of the rectified credit account in the bureau credit repair report. An individual’s written applications then continue to supplement steadily in the section of the credit account to assist future creditor in evaluating the credit story of the individual. For instance, a mention in the credit report about everything being washed out by the Hurricane Katrina, and prior to that no single loan reimbursement was overlooked is very essential. Such kinds of matters are sincerely contemplated in the credit repair report.

Eradications:

The elimination of all the credit data about an individual’s authentic bad credit times, such as credit data pertaining to financial failure, recoveries and loans are not carried out surprisingly by the bureau credit repair report, as the transformations of such data is considered extremely against the law.

The report also need not to be mistakenly considered as a latest or derivative distinctive case pertaining to the credit history of an individual. This process is also quite unlawful, with the utilization of sham passports and bogus I.D.s.

Lastly, it is firmly advised to supervise all the transformed data in the report, if one desires to alter his report. To tackle this problem the easiest alternative method available is to demand one more bureau credit repair report.

Joel

Natalie Aranda asked:

Credit worthiness is usually measured by your credit history, which represents your financial reputation among creditors. Failing to pay off your credit card debt, not paying off the minimum monthly amount, missing a payment or not making your payments on time can lead you on a path with apparently no return: adverse credit history.

Because debt management is a process to reduce, and eventually erase, your outstanding credit card debt by dealing with creditors and managing your assets adequately, adverse credit history can be repaired and even obtain debt relief over time, in return. Adverse credit history is more commonly known as impaired credit, poor credit, or bad credit tracked by the national credit bureau.

If your credit card debt has led you to impaired credit and your debt management is unclear, take the step by step credit repair guide:

- Request your credit bureau report

- Review all the entries carefully, while checking for discrepancies

- Dispute wrong and missing entries by contacting the companies

- You can pay a credit repair company if for any reason you prefer they review your credit history or your credit card debt

- Beware of financial institutions requiring you to pay upfront for such services or promising debt relief

- Companies who advise you not to contact the credit bureaus directly to get your information are also suspicious

- If you prefer to repair your credit by yourself, make sure to send your disputes using certified letters

- Include copies of supporting documentation that help you to correct an erroneous entry on your credit report

- It is not necessary to dispute every credit item on your consumer report if you do not want, but those affecting your credit card debt

- Do not forget to send a copy of your letter for each disputed item to the three national credit bureaus

- Keep a record of the number provided by every credit bureau for follow up reference

Stick to your debt management plan and get the dispute form provided by any of the credit bureaus. Log the results of your disputes, keep a receipt of letters delivered and so on. Be aware of companies or individual suggesting you to do anything illegal or that sounds risky or shady, like building a new credit file or creating a new identity or using an Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)

The effort invested to repair your credit will be rewarded with the improvement of your credit score and debt relief in the long run. As for companies promising you credit repair keep in mind the old saying: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Alvin

David Maillie asked:

Many people have and suffer from bad or marginal credit. This does not mean they are a bad person as bad credit can happen as a result of a sudden unplanned illness or emergency, a job layoff, etc… Many families do not have sufficient savings to ride out a serious and costly emergency or job loss. Actually, according to MSN, many families are living only one paycheck away from bankruptcy and this is not good. To stop this one needs to put reigns on all unnecessary spending, but we will talk more about this further on.

The first step anyone with possibly bad credit needs to take is to find out the exact extent of your credit. You may have only seen 1 credit report or only been told what might be on your record by a bank or loan manager or finance manager, but did you know there are really 3 separate credit reporting agencies and each has a different report and score? Just because one credit report shows as bad doesn’t necessarily mean the others do, and vice versa, if one is good the other two may be quite the opposite. Usually, as a rule, they are similar, but negative items or entries do tend to stay longer on some then others and some tend to have more errors in their entry reporting.

Go online to any of the three major credit bureaus (Just Google the names of Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) and pay to have your all three in one report with credit score pulled. You want all three as they can and probably will be slightly different. The report is necessary so you can actually measure and understand exactly how bad it is and what needs to be done to improve and fix it. A all three in one report is around $40 to $50 and worth it. Free reports which you can receive per recent federal laws will only give one credit bureau and no score (how do you know where you stand without a score unless you are a finance manager or work at a bank loan department?)

If your score is 600 and above your credit is marginal, but not bad. You won’t have too much to repair. If your credit is 500 or below you probably have a lot of negative entries, possible tax liens, judgments, repos (car repossessions), a possible bankruptcy, and/or other serious negative influences and entries in your reports. A low or bad credit score will take more work and effort, but you can still achieve a much higher credit rating and fairly quickly.

Now, that you have your credit report and scores, find out which is the most important credit reporting bureau for your area of the country (each bureau has a particular area of influence). The easiest way to do this is to contact your local new car dealer and ask the finance manager what credit report they most commonly use to establish credit. Usually it is only one and that is the one that will be most influential in your area and the first one you should repair.

Glenda

Jimmy Jamm asked:

There has been a move by many apartments to vet prospective tenants by running their credit. This practice was not very widespread before and came to become embodied in many complexes policies after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. In those days, having a job for six months or more or having an income that was at least 3 times more than the monthly rent was sufficient to qualify one. This is not the case anymore. Many apartments have resulted in routine credit ad rental history checks to weed out prospective tenants and many have found themselves denied a decent place to live.

Credit and rental history checks causing many to be turned away

There are a variety of reasons behind why apartments peruse an applicant’s rental history and credit. The most obvious one is to determine whether the prospective tenant has the tendency to break rental agreements (broken leases). They also check to see whether one owes anything to previous complexes. Some of them conduct an actual full credit check while others will only check the rental history. In many cases and in either one of these cases, people get turned away and this adds to their misery especially if they are desperate for housing. The credit checks also only consider the past and may not have a bearing as to whether the person has reformed or not. Regardless, it is a huge inconvenience to be turned away.

Find out what your credit rating is

It is unbelievable just how many people get turned away because of bad credit and who have no idea what is in their credit. They also do not know what information the apartments used to base their denial. This cruel surprise ought not to be. It is now extremely easy to download all three bureau credit reports right from the Internet for less than 50 dollars. Getting a copy of one’s credit ensures that they are away as to what is causing the problem.

Getting the approval despite spotty credit or a broken lease

There are numerous tactics that can be used to be approved for an apartment even with a broken lease or bad credit. Many of these cannot be discussed in the scope of this article but one of them is to find a co-signer. This is someone who has good credit and they can act as a guarantor. One can also write a letter that states exactly what steps they are taking to remedy their bad credit. Many apartment complexes take this as a sign of good faith.

Want to win an approval despite of having a broken lease or bad credit? There are various techniques that one can employ. One of the best one is to find out what apartments in your area that DO NOT conduct credit checks or the ones that approve despite of a broken lease.

Cynthia

Conleth Onu asked:

Is bad credit ruining your life? Have you been denied credit because of negative information on your credit report? Do you want to learn how to make a good credit report instantly? If you answered yes to the above questions, you’re in the right place.

Having a bad credit record will make your life difficult in many situations. Nothing can slow you down faster financially than negative information contained in a credit bureau file. Sometimes, the information is true, other times it is deceiving or even totally wrong. What can you do if you believe that you have been turned down for credit because of inaccurate or outdated information?

There are some steps that you can take, to get rid of blemishes on your report. Your first step should be to get your credit reports from the three major credit bureaus. You can get a free copy of your report one time a year, and you can also obtain one at no charge if you have been denied credit within the past 60 days.

Once you have obtained your report, examine it carefully. Make sure that all information is being reported correctly. If you find any incorrect information in your report, you can dispute it with the credit bureau.

Send a letter to the credit bureau explaining your dispute. When filing a dispute, tell the credit bureau what information you believe is incorrect and the reason why. Include any documentation that would help support your claim.

By law the credit bureaus are required to delete negative items from credit reports whenever a particular item reaches a certain age. Also, inaccuarate or unverifiable information must be deleted from credit files.

If there are accounts on your report that need to be settled, you can negotiate with the creditors. Be sure to have the creditor sign and date the settlement proposal and return it to you, before you pay them.

Once you have finished eliminating negatives from credit report, and have a clean clear credit report, it’s time to add positive information on your report.

A secured credit card can help you build good credit. It looks and works like any other major credit card. Secured Visa and Mastercard are issued against your depositing cash in a financial institution. That deposit serves as a collateral for the credit card. If you maintain a good account, your excellent credit rating will be recorded on your report.

Another effective way to add positive credit information to your credit file is to take out a small installment loan from a bank and pay it back promptly.

You can also build good credit by getting Department Store and Gas Company credit cards. By having your very own major credit card, you can qualify for instant credit at many department stores and gas stations.

Once you have established a good credit rating, you will be eligible for loans, credit cards, and other items of credit.

Rodney

Bob Pering asked:

Deleting bad credit items on your credit report is definitely a worthwhile pursuit. It is possible to improve your credit scores anywhere from 100 to 200 points or more, by removing derogatory information from your credit reports.

The first step is to review your reports so you know where the problems are. Start by getting copies of your reports from the three major credit bureaus. The three bureaus are Equifax, Experian, and Transunion.

If you have not taken advantage of your free annual credit report this year, contact Annual Credit Report or phone 1-877-322-8228. You can also mail your request to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.

If you have already received your free reports for this year, contact the three bureaus individually for your reports. You will be required to pay a small fee for each report.

Experian PO Box 740241 Atlanta, GA 30374

Equifax PO Box 2002 Allen, TX 75013

Transunion PO Box 2000 Chester, PA 19022

The next step is to review them carefully, looking for errors, omissions, and inaccurate items. Make note of all you find. First check the spelling of your name and verify that the addresses they show you’ve lived at are correct.

Then look for items that are incorrect or inaccurate. Pay particular attention to: derogatory items still showing even though they should have dropped off your report by now (most derogatory items can only be reported for seven years, bankruptcies for ten years). Also look for accounts that do not belong to you and accounts that show a balance due even though they have been paid off.

Deleting any bad credit items you discover is done by sending a letter to the credit bureau disputing any incorrect or inaccurate items you find. The credit bureau then forwards your dispute to the creditor that reported the item, and asks them to verify the legitimacy of the reported item.

If the creditor responds that the report is accurate, then the item stays on your report and is not removed. However, if the creditor does not respond to the dispute within 30 days of receipt, the item, by law, must be removed from the report.

It is possible to improve your credit scores anywhere from 100 to 200 points or more, by removing derogatory information from your credit reports. Deleting bad credit items on your credit report is definitely a worthwhile pursuit.

Cathy

Justin Smith asked:

Raising your credit score can be a fairly simple and straightforward process unless you have derogatory marks that need to be disputed (which will be explained below).

The reasons for bad credit can be as follows, high balances, bankruptcies, late payments, and many others. The most significant thing you can do to raise your score is to change your financial habits. Chances are that if you have a bad credit score, you did something to make it that way. Here are some of the best ways to quickly raise your credit score:

1. The most obvious: pay off your debt! This doesn’t include a home mortgage, but revolving balances such as credit card debt, a car loan, etc.

2. Make every payment on time. This is the most important factor in your credit score rating. If you have had late payments in the past, it will take some time to see real results from your on-time payments, but keep it up, sooner or later the credit bureau will notice the change in your payment habits. Develop the mentality that no late payment is acceptable!

3. If possible, pay over your minimum amount. This is especially important with credit card balances, and will reflect a slight boost in your score.

4. If you have paid off all your debt, and your credit score seems to be at a stand still, you might want to make small purchases each month with your credit card and pay them off immediately. Often times the credit bureaus like to see at least some kind of activity. Otherwise, they have no way to gauge how you are doing financially.

5. Be patient! Sometimes repairing credit can be a long and arduous process. Especially if you have had a bankruptcy. It can often take the better part of a year or more to see any significant raises in your score.

Clearing a derogatory mark on your credit report:

This is probably the most difficult in regards to credit repair. If you have requested a copy of your credit report, and notice a problem (an example would be a late payment mark), that shouldn’t be there, you need to take action to get the derogatory mark cleared as soon as possible. It is extremely important to get your credit score cleared before you attempt to get prequalified for mortgage.

Here are the steps you should take:

First of all, if you are in contact with a loan officer, you may want to describe the problem you are having to them. They can be very helpful when it comes to credit repair, and should know exactly what to do if you have a bad mark on your credit that is a mistake. In some cases, they may even call the creditor for you to address the situation.

Second, you should call your creditor and each credit bureau to find out which course of action you should take. In most cases, writing a letter will do. Here is an example letter:

Date 00/00/00

Dear Big Credit Bureau,

This letter is a complaint that you are reporting inaccurate and/or incomplete credit information on my credit report.
I am displeased that you have included the below information in my credit profile that includes the following errors. Credit reporting laws ensure that bureaus report 100% accurate credit information.

The following information concerning my credit report needs to be re-investigated. I respectfully request to be provided proof of this alleged item on my credit report. If this cannot be provided, the item must be deleted from my report as soon as possible:

CREDITOR AGENCY, acct. 123-34567-ABC

The listed item is inaccurate and/or incomplete, and is a serious error in reporting. Please delete this information, and supply a corrected credit profile to all creditors who have received a copy within the last 6 months, or the last 2 years for employment purposes. Also, please provide the name, address, and telephone number of each credit grantor or other subscriber.

Under federal law, you have 30 days to complete your re- investigation. Be advised that the description of the procedure used to determine the accuracy and completeness of the information is hereby requested as well, to be provided within 15 days of the completion of your re-investigation.

Sincerely,

your signature

Your Name

SSN# 123-45-6789

Unfortunately, you will need to write 3 separate letters to each of the 3 major credit bureaus. Here are the contact addresses for each:

Trans Union

P.O. Box 1000

Chester, PA 19022

1-800-888-4213

Equifax

P.O. Box 740241

Atlanta, GA 30374-0241

1-800-997-2493

Experian

P.O. Box 2104

Allen, TX 75013-2104

1-888-397-3742

Amy

Ronnica Rothe asked:

Having a bad credit report can affect your current interest rates and your ability to apply for further credit or loans. It is a good idea to know what your credit report contains, as this is what potential lenders see when they consider you as a candidate for a loan whether it is for a house, car, or other item.

The first step you need to take in examining and fixing your credit is to obtain a copy of your credit report. The three major credit bureaus are now required to provide you one free credit report each year, through the website annualcreditreport.com. Though each credit bureau might have slightly different information about you, each report should be more or less the same.

Once you have obtained a copy of your credit report, look it over for accuracy. Most negative items are only allowed to stay on your credit report for 7 years, however bankruptcies can remain for 10 years and unpaid tax liens can remain indefinitely after they are posted to your report. If there are any negative items older than that, you need to dispute it so that they will be removed.

Also, make sure that all items are correct. Because negative items are more likely reported than positive ones, it is possible that there is something beneficial missing. Check that all the accounts that you have stayed current on are listed. If not, dispute it so that they will get listed. Also, sometimes items have been reported inaccurately or have been inappropriately attributed to you. These also need to be disputed.

It is relatively simple to dispute an item on your credit report through the specific credit bureau’s website. After filing the dispute, you will hear back from the company with an updated copy of your credit report. If it is not fixed completely, it will then be time to file a dispute by mail with documentation. Make sure to save a copy of everything you send.

There is no need to pay a credit repair service to help you out. There is nothing that they can do that you can’t do easily for yourself. Anything more that they promise you is most likely illegal and not actually beneficial.

If you want to find out more about what on your credit report is helping or hurting you, talk to a credit counselor. They can weed through your credit report and provide you with steps you can take in the future to improve your credit. A credit counselor can show you ways to improve your credit score by making positive credit history to offset the negative items you have in your past.

If you have credit card accounts that are reaching their credit limits or ones that are delinquent, a debt management plan and credit counseling might be right for you. It will allow your accounts to stay current and action to be taken to lower your debt, which are positive factors. Such credit counseling can be beneficial to your credit history as well as provide you with information that can help you avoid bad debt in the future. Knowing what is on your credit report can help you determine what steps to take to improve your financial situation.

Dennis
