Ann Born asked:

Whenever it is time for you apply for a loan of any type, your credit is generally pulled. Depending on your credit history, your score may vary from anywhere within the 500s or lower, which is considered very bad to the 700s or higher which is considered excellent. Although many people consider the credit system within the United States to be somewhat cumbersome, it has been in place for many years and does not show any signs of changing soon. If you are trying to contact credit bureau agencies, you might be surprised to find that there are more than one that actually score you and are often looked at by the lending institutions.

The three credit agencies which take care of scoring your credit and ultimately help to determine whether you qualify for a loan are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Each of these three credit agencies will provide its own unique number, based on the scoring system that it uses to determine your credit. Whenever it comes time to contact credit bureau agencies, you need to figure out which of these agencies needs to be contacted. For example, if there is some fraudulent or mistaken information that appears on your credit report, you need to find out which of these agencies and is responsible for that report and contact them directly.

It may also be necessary for you to contact credit bureau agencies in order to receive a copy of your credit. As individuals, each of us are entitled to receive a free copy of our credit report on an annual basis. Although you certainly would not want to pull it all of the time because that would lower your credit scores, keeping in touch with your credit and knowing where your numbers are at is very important for you to make sure that no problems are occurring. Regularly contacting credit bureau companies and receiving a copy of your credit report can help you to avoid identity theft and to recognize any mistakes that were made on the report before they damage you too much.

There are also some companies which will contact credit bureau agencies for you and pull all three of your credit reports. Although you may have to pay a fee in order for this to take place, it may be worth your while considering the time that is involved in contacting each of the individual agencies one at a time.

Bertha

Hector Milla asked:

Many people are very worried about their financial situations right now. The recession has made it very hard for many thousands of people to stay employed. The people who are lucky enough to have jobs are still being burdened by the fact that their paychecks are being cut by a percent and their bonuses are being cancelled. These problems are only being compounded by the fact that many people are struggling to pay their bills and thousands more are in debts that they are having trouble getting out of.

There are several ways that these people are trying to cut back on spending and keep better records of their spending. Many are turning to financial advisors to help them to cut spending. Some are looking more closely at their bank statements and credit card statements to make sure that they are only purchasing things that they need. Some people are even cutting up their credit cards to prevent any unwanted debt from adding up on them without them thinking about it. Along with all of these things that are helping people to control their spending and keep track of their expenses, many people are actually checking their credit reports.

This report can be one of the most important financial documents that there is. It shoes not only everything that you need to know about your finances, but it also shows you what your rating is. This report tells you all of your outstanding loans and mortgages, as well as how well you are doing paying back bills and other things of that nature. These reports are very reliable if they are bought and received from the correct places. There are many places that offer these reports, but every company and firm should be reviewed before buying a report.

The truth is that there are thousands of businesses out there fighting to sell you their report on your credit. However, there are really only three agencies that a professional and safe enough for you to do business with. These companies are the best of the best and are actually contracted to do credit checks and reports with the government. These firms are the big three reporting agencies called Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. They have been creating reports for years and are the top picks among all other reporting agencies. These are by far the best credit reporting bureau agencies and the only ones safe enough to be endorsed by the government.

Henry

Joseph Kenny asked:

When it comes to having bad credit ratings, or at least less than good credit ratings, it sure can make things a little tough financially to be able to do what you want. Many people today start getting into bad credit partly because of credit cards simply by taking full advantage of the “charge it” possibilities that a credit card gives you. A credit card – at least a certain kind, can actually help you to repair your credit – here’s how.

While a credit card can actually help you to improve your credit ratings, you probably already know that you will not be able to get the best rates or features on a new credit card. The terms will generally be restrictive and your rates higher. It also means that any credit limits you get will be low – at least to start with, since the credit card company will consider you to be a higher risk than someone with good credit.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that the credit card company you are applying to says that it reports to a major credit bureau. It may report to all three of the major ones (look for it) which are Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. If it does not report to at least one of these, look for another card. It cannot help you to repair your credit even if you do make every payment on time.

The next thing is the interest rate – you will want to get one that has a very low rate of interest – the lower the better. This interest rate is what you will be paying each month on whatever balance you leave on the credit card. Ideally, you will want to pay off the full amount each month. This will allow you to build your credit rating faster.

Check out the various fees that apply. You may actually be surprised to find out just how many there are – a fee for just about everything. The idea they want to convey is that while they are willing to take a risk by issuing you a credit card, you will pay for the pleasure of it. The good news, though, is that by handling your finances well with the new card, you will get offers for better cards with time. Because there are so many fees, you do not just want to accept any card – compare them to discover which one has the least amount of fees. The truth is that when your fees are applied at the start, that there will be little room left to charge much of anything else.

Most credit cards that are issued for those with bad credit do not include the usual introductory offers that a regular card may have. There will not be any rebates or rewards, either. A couple of these cards may offer balance transfers.

For your own information, be sure to see if there is a time period stated in the application, that tells you how often the credit card company will review your account. This is important because your opportunity to get a better card can only be offered at that time. At those reviews, the issuing company may elect to raise your credit limit, lessen your fees, or some other such option. Even though you will pay more at the start, getting your credit card for people with bad credit is good because soon your credit rating can be improved and offers will come that you will enjoy more.

Billy

Tim Gorman asked:

Many people who look into their reports find that their credit information has errors and those errors usually affect your credit negatively.

Maintaining an accurate score sometimes requires us to be pro-active, and we must write letters to remove information off our credit report. These are sent to the big 3 credit bureaus. Although in many cases the first thing most people want to do is to call the Credit Bureau and tell them off, this would be counterproductive. Instead the best method would be to sit down and write a credit report dispute letter.

You should read your credit report, take notes as to what you consider the problem areas are and think whether what’s on the report could actually be true. If, in finding that what’s on the report is false, you need to think through how you’re going to word your letters to remove info off credit report. You’re going to have to send a copy of this letter to each of the three main credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. Be polite and state facts as you see them. See example letter below.

Dear (credit bureau name here),

After looking at a copy of my credit file, I found that it contained erroneous information. I would like to dispute this information and request a correction. I am concerned about the information that you have put in my credit report as it could seriously impair the credit rating I enjoy with lending institutions.

You have not (state the problem here).

Be sure to include the month, and the date, and the name of the business.

I am enclosing a photocopy of my cancelled check as proof of my payment. Hopefully, this will correct the accuracy of my credit file. As you are certainly aware of, the credit bureaus are only allowed to use accurate information in a consumer’s credit file.

Thank you for correcting the above errors to insure that it doesn’t impair my personal credit. Please contact me as soon as the correction has been made and my credit report is again accurate. Please send a copy of my credit report to: (place mailing address here).

Yours,

(Your name)

Be sure to include your full name as listed in your credit report, address, Social Security number, copy of your driver’s license, copy of the credit report, and copy of your proof, i.e. cancelled check.

Be sure to retain a copy of whatever you send to each credit bureau. Make a note of the date that you mail your letters to remove info off credit report. Using certified or registered mail is a good idea, as this will give you proof of the mailing date.

Joan

Beth Pardue asked:

There are three main credit bureaus in the United States; Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. Each bureau collects your personal and financial information which is then sold to lenders such as banks, credit unions, credit card companies, mortgage and auto loan lenders. Your credit report is the product of this collected information. Lending and credit companies use your credit information to determine if they will approve you or not and at what interest rate you will pay.

Many people are recognizing the importance of checking their own credit report to verify its accuracy and to make sure that they know where they stand in the credit world. Until they begin the process to obtain a copy of their credit report, some people do not realize that they actually have three credit reports instead of just one. The three main credit bureaus keep separate credit records from one another and produce their own credit reports. Instead of the credit bureaus working together and sharing information among themselves like some people may think, they are actually competitors. That is why the information provided on one credit report will more than likely be different from the information provided on the credit report from another credit bureau. Therefore, it is recommended to check your credit report from all three credit bureaus in order to see the complete picture.

There are a couple of options to checking all three of your credit reports. You can contact each of the credit bureaus individually to request a copy. Or you can go through one of the many companies that provide a 3-in-1 credit report like [http://www.credit-report-credit-score.com]. Obtaining a 3-in-1 credit report is usually more convenient and user friendly to the consumer compared to requesting individual copies.

Verifying the data on all three of your credit reports is the only way to know that the information that potential lenders and creditors are evaluating you on is correct. When considering you for a loan, some lenders will pull your credit report from only one or two of the credit bureaus while other lenders will pull your credit report from all three. It is always a good idea to check your credit reports BEFORE applying for your next big purchase. Covering your bases beforehand can often times save you a lot of time and hassle during the application process.

————————-

Note: This article may be freely reproduced as long as the authors bio paragraph at the bottom of this article is included, the article is published “as is” (unedited) and all URL’s are made active hyperlinks with no syntax changes.

————————-

Jon

Helen Hecker asked:

Everyone wants a good credit score. So much of what we do financially is dependent on this FICO score on our credit report. Of course it’s important to try to make payments on time, etc. but this isn’t always easy to do. Emergencies come up. You can be the best person in the world and responsible too and you try to do things right. But there are secrets in the credit reporting field.

But you may just find yourself short on cash and try as you may just have to miss a payment or make a late payment or you’re charged for something you did not buy or returned or something else. Many times this is through no fault of your own.

If you don’t have a current free annual credit report you can get a free credit report instantly online. After you have your credit report in hand, look through the report and find all the negative marks or bad items. Make a list. Hopefully it’s short. Maybe you only have one or two. If you have several then list them with the highest amount down to the lowest.

This is an easy lesson in how to repair your credit. We’re going to tackle the lowest amounts first. And here’s the secret that many people do not know. If you write a letter to the three credit report companies or bureaus and dispute any of the amounts, the credit bureaus contact the creditors. If the amounts are small the creditor may not even bother to answer the credit bureaus.

The credit bureau has to remove the item if the creditor hasn’t responded within a certain length of time.

Don’t think that writing the letter is hard to do. Sit down early in the morning when you are fresh or at a time when you have more energy. Just simply address three envelopes to the three credit bureaus. They are Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.

You can easily get their address from the free credit report or online. Just explain that you found some errors on your credit report that you want to dispute. Make it short.

Enclose any relevant documentation, if you have any, which shows there is an error or that you want to dispute. This would include any cancelled checks, online payment confirmations, etc. Ask for a correction. Then say something like you want to keep a good standing and value an accurate and good credit history.

Also say something like a good credit rating and credit score is important to me. Make sure to name the creditor and the date of the error. Keep a nice tone to the letter.

Then close with a ‘thank you’ paragraph. Something like “Thank you for attending to my letter and this matter so I can maintain a good credit history. If possible let me know that my file has been reviewed and send me a copy of the corrected credit report.”

If you review your free credit report often you can catch small errors and fix your credit report before too much time passes. This is a little known secret and if the creditor amount is small enough you should be able to easily get it removed. It’s worth the small effort to raise your credit score. You CAN fix it yourself knowing this secret! There are many other credit report secrets!

Suzanne

Carrie Reeder asked:

Each consumer with credit history should obtain a copy of their report annually. The cost of credit reports vary. If obtaining a copy from the credit bureaus, consumers may pay $15 per bureau. However, some online credit agencies advertise low cost credit reports. Rather than paying for a credit report, consider obtaining a free report.

Who Qualifies for a Free Credit Report?

By law, each consumer is entitled to one free credit report each year. Although reports are free, consumer may have to pay a few bucks to view their credit score. Despite this incentive to encourage credit report monitoring, many people neglect to review the contents of their report. This results in millions becoming victims of identity theft each year. Free credit reports are available online, and viewable for up to 30 days. However, other factors may also qualify you for a free credit report.

Credit Report Inaccuracies

If you believe that your credit report contains errors or mistakes, you are a good candidate for a free credit report from each of the three bureaus. The majority of people only review their report from one bureau. However, if the contents on the Experian report are inaccurate, it’s worth obtaining copies of the other three reports to ensure that the same mistake has not occurred twice.

Denied Credit, Employment, or Insurance

Although credit history has nothing to do with your ability to function well on the job or drive a car, many employers, and insurance agencies have begun checking credit reports. In some instance, a negative credit rating may prevent you from obtaining employment, or result in higher car insurance premiums. Individuals who have been denied a line of credit, employment, or insurance because of their credit will qualify for a free report.

Experience a Credit Limit Reduction or Interest Rate Increase

Unfortunately, creditors have the right to reduce credit limits and increase rates at their leisure. If you habitually make late payments or exceed your credit limit, a change in credit card limits and rates should be expected. However, if changes occur for no apparent reason, it helps to obtain a free copy of your report and ensure that all information is accurate.

Edward
